Understanding, Diagnosing, & Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea: 314.227.9141

Is your bed partner constantly complaining about your loud snoring? Or are you feeling tired and sleepy all the time regardless of how many hours of sleep you’ve had? If you find yourself answering yes to these two questions, then you may be suffering from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a common sleeping disorder often characterized by disturbed breathing. Individuals suffering from sleep apnea may also experience pauses in between breaths that are usually followed by a snorting sound as they involuntarily gasp for breath.

There Are Two Main Types of Sleep Apnea:

  • Obstructive- Blockage of airway
  • Central- Poor signals from the part of the brain that controls breathing

Out of these two causes, the more common one is the blockage of the airway or Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health, about 12 million Americans are estimated to have OSA with others left undiagnosed. While this condition is completely manageable, patients who are untreated may suffer from poor sleep quality that can lead to serious health concerns such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and depression.

Snoring vs. Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Snoring is one of the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea, but not all patients who snore have sleep apnea. Sometimes, a person’s snoring is caused by their anatomy or lifestyle choices.

OSA, on the other hand, is a chronic progressive condition that may worsen or lead to serious, debilitating and even life-threatening problems. Individuals suffering from OSA may experience pausing for breath for a few seconds or more, which can be dangerous especially for elderly patients and patients with obesity problems. Many patients who snore are usually found to have OSA, but not all, and some patients with OSA do not snore at all.

Available Treatments for Snoring & Sleep Apnea

While snoring and obstructive sleep apnea can be two different sleeping disorders, patients suffering from either condition can benefit from proper diagnosis and treatment.

Some of the most common treatments for snoring include:

  • CPAP machine which helps increase positive air pressure in your throat
  • Oral appliances that reposition the lower jaw
  • Positional therapy or training patients to sleep on their sides
  • Weight loss
  • ENT surgery to reduce the tissues blocking the airway

For obstructive sleep apnea, the most common treatments include:

  • CPAP machine
  • Oral appliances
  • Weight loss
  • ENT surgery
  • Positional therapy
  • Myofunctional training or training the tongue into a position that does not block the airway
  • Bariatric surgery or stomach restriction

Medical insurance does pay for treatment but always with qualifications. James Lillenberg DDS PC can discuss with you the various sleep apnea dental treatments available, as well as obstructive sleep apnea treatments, and address any concerns you might have as far as sleep apnea and how it might affect your health.
