Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by pauses in breathing while a person sleeps.

While obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common cause of sleep apnea, there are other forms of this condition, which include:

  • Central sleep apnea- When the brain is unable to send signals to the muscles in charge of breathing
  • Mixed sleep apnea or complex sleep apnea- When a person suffers from both obstructive and central sleep apnea

In obstructive sleep apnea, breathing is impaired or disrupted during sleep due to airway collapse. While many patients who snore are found to have OSA, and not all patients with OSA snore.
