Finding the Right Treatment Plan for You

There are several ways to treat and manage the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. In treating OSA, the goal is to restore ease of breathing while sleeping and minimize other associated symptoms including snoring, fatigue, excessive daytime sleepiness, and insomnia. Obstructive sleep apnea treatments also aim to give patients a more refreshing sleep and prevent them from developing other serious health concerns such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke.

Below are the treatment options available for sleep apnea:

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Breathing devices
  • Dental or oral appliances
  • Surgery

James Lillenberg DDS works closely with our patients to find the right treatment plan that is both effective and comfortable for them. We also help patients who have already been diagnosed but are looking for an alternate solution other than the one they are using now.

Alleviate Your Symptoms with a Few Lifestyle Changes

For some OSA sufferers, all it takes is a few lifestyle changes to manage their sleep apnea symptoms. Leading a healthy lifestyle such as quitting smoking, keeping a healthy weight, or avoiding alcohol consumption is one of the most helpful methods for treating sleep apnea. Other changes that an OSA patient can make to alleviate sleep apnea symptoms is training themselves to sleep on their side. Sleeping positions, especially sleeping on one’s back, are found to affect in keeping a patient’s airway open.

Available Breathing Devices

One of the most common treatments for obstructive sleep apnea is the use of a breathing machine such as the continuous positive airway pressure device or CPAP. CPAPs are designed to exert air pressure to keep the airways open. Patients wear a mask over the nose and mouth or just the nose while they sleep to allow a constant stream of air pressure open up the walls of their throat and prevent blockage of the breathing passage.

Oral Appliances

Another option is the use of dental or oral appliances to help keep the patient’s airway open. These oral appliances are custom-designed for patients and are worn to control the position of their tongue and lower jaw while they sleep. There are a number of dental appliances that are available for obstructive sleep apnea patients to help alleviate sleep symptoms. Dr. Lillenberg works closely with you to determine the right oral appliance for you and make any necessary adjustments to ensure comfort and effectivity.

Surgical Solutions for Sleep Apnea

James Lillenberg DDS can also refer you to an ENT for evaluation. The goal of the surgery is to increase the patient’s airway by removing or shrinking the excess tissues that are causing the blockage through a series of shots. Another surgical option is the insertion of a piece of stiff plastic under the tissue to prevent the throat from collapsing during sleep.
